Schumer to Kavanaugh and Gorsuch: ‘You Will Pay the Price’ – ‘Won’t Know What Hit You’ if You Make ‘Awful Decisions’

Schumer said, “Now, we stand here today because behind me, inside the walls of this court, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments, as you know, for the first major abortion right cases since [Justice] Kavanaugh and [Justice] Gorsuch came to the bench. We know what’s at stake. Over the last three years, women’s reproductive rights have come under attack in a way we haven’t seen in modern history. From Louisiana, to Missouri, to Texas, Republican legislatures are waging a war on women, all women, and they’re taking away fundamental rights. I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you, if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
President Donald Trump on Wednesday evening slammed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for threatening conservative Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh and demanded “serious action” be taken immediately against the top congressional Democrat.“This is a direct & dangerous threat to the U.S. Supreme Court by Schumer. If a Republican did this, he or she would be arrested, or impeached. Serious action MUST be taken NOW!” the president tweeted, sharing a video clip of Schumer’s remarks via Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).

You won’t know what hit you, if you go forward with these awful decisions.Schumer made the warning while the Supreme Court heard a challenge to a Louisiana law which requires doctors who perform abortions to possess hospital admitting privileges. Kavanaugh has signaled that he is open to ruling that the state’s abortion law is constitutional, reports the Washington Examiner.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare rebuke of Schumer’s threat, calling it both “inappropriate” and “dangerous” for a leading lawmaker to utter.
Roberts said in a rare statemen:
Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.Justin Goodman, a spokesperson for Schumer, responded to Roberts by accusing him of adopting the “right wing’s deliberate misinterpretation” of the Senate Minority Leader’s comment, “while remaining silent when President Trump attacked Justices Sotomayor and Ginsberg last week.” Further, the spokesman then stated that Roberts’ condemnation illustrates that he does “not just call balls and strikes.”
Last week, President Donald Trump argued Sotomayor and Ginsburg should recuse themselves from cases involving his administration over their previous criticisms of him and his policies. “I just don’t know how they can not recuse themselves for anything having to do with Trump or Trump-related,” he said at the time.
Mitch McConnell: Schumer Threat to Justices Was ‘Unhinged,’ ‘Shameful’Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced a resolution on Thursday, along with 14 Senate Republicans, to censure Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for threatening Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch.During a rally in front of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the Senate minority leader warned that there would be consequences if the two justices voted the wrong way during a case that challenged Louisiana’s abortion law.
“I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you, if you go forward with these awful decisions,” Schumer said.
Schumer conceded on Thursday that he “shouldn’t have used the words I did” but then blamed Republicans for “manufacturing outrage” over the controversy.
The Hawley resolution cited that Schumer had admitted that threatening statements could “increase” the danger of violence against officials. Schumer had acknowledged this in the wake of the June 2017 attack against multiple members of Congress, which had nearly ended the life of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA).
The Hawley resolution reads:
Senator Schumer has acknowledged that threatening statements can increase the dangers of violence against government officials when he stated on June 15, 2017, following the attempted murder of several elected Members of Congress, ‘We would all be wise to reflect on the importance of civility in our [N]ation’s politics’ and that ‘the level of nastiness, vitriol, and hate that has seeped into our politics must be excised.’Hawley’s proposal to condemn Schumer quickly gained support from across the Senate Republican conference. Sens. Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Braun (R-IN), Rick Scott (R-FL), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Mike Lee (R-UT), Ted Cruz (R-TX), David Perdue (R-GA), Tim Scott (R-SC), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), and Martha McSally (R-AZ) all cosponsored the resolution to condemn Schumer.
Loeffler said Thursday:
Words matter. There’s no room for threatening rhetoric in American politics. Senator Schumer’s use of threatening language against two sitting Supreme Court justices was inappropriate and sets a dangerous standard in an already polarized political climate. I applaud Chief Justice Roberts for condemning the Minority Leader’s remarks. His behavior cannot go unchecked, and this resolution will demonstrate that this level of hyper-partisan rhetoric against any official will not be tolerated. It is time the Senate holds him accountable.Perdue said:
Minority Leader Chuck Schumer attacked the country’s highest judicial body yesterday. Threatening two sitting Supreme Court justices is not only disgraceful, it is dangerous. This shows how far the radical left is willing to go to realize their socialist agenda. Schumer’s actions threaten the very balance of our three-branch government. It was irresponsible, inappropriate, and unacceptable. I hope the Senate will stand together and condemn this unacceptable behavior. After Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pushed the House to vote on articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, Hawley introduced a resolution to dismiss the articles of impeachment due to lack of prosecution.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Republicans quickly cosponsored the resolution.
However, McConnell has yet to back the Hawley resolution to censure Schumer and his controversial remarks.
Hawley wrote on Thursday that Schumer made a “non-apology” and that the New York Democrat should be censured.
“Schumer refusing to take responsibility. This non-apology is the equivalent of ‘I’m sorry you feel that way.’ He threatened #SupremeCourt Justices. Personally. By name. He should be censured #CensureSchumer,” Hawley wrote.

“The distinguished men and women of the Supreme Court do not and must not serve at the pleasure of angry partisans,” he continued. “They do not need to pay any mind to unhinged threats, as shameful as they may be.”
“I would suggest that my Democratic colleagues spend less time trying to threaten impartial judges, and more time coming up with ideas that are actually constitutional,” he added.This is the result when we have people making threats, and encouraging violence, and nothing is done. Every single person who does these things should be jailed. We started with celebrities making threats, then added in people like Maxine Waters inciting violence, and now we have this! Enough is enough!! We the People need to demand that something is done. We need to contact our members of Congress, the White House, the Department of Justice, and demand that these unhinged Lefists are charged for these crimes. All of them.
During a Wednesday afternoon rally, Schumer stated in a speech near the Supreme Court that the two conservatives judges will “pay the price” if they vote against pro-choice advocates in a case regarding a Louisiana abortion law.

The remarks drew blowback from President Donald Trump, who demanded that Schumer be immediately punished.
“This is a direct & dangerous threat to the U.S. Supreme Court by Schumer. If a Republican did this, he or she would be arrested, or impeached. Serious action MUST be taken NOW!” the president tweeted.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare rebuke of Schumer’s comments, describing them as “inappropriate” and “dangerous,” especially from a congressional leader. “Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter,” said Roberts.
Meanwhile, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has announced plans to introduce a motion to censure Schumer on Thursday.
“Now @chuckschumer is threatening Supreme Court Justices personally, to the point of implying their physical safety is endangered. Disgusting, shameful, and frankly, WEAK,” Hawley wrote on social media Wednesday. “I would call on Schumer to apologize, but we all know he has no shame. So tomorrow I will introduce a motion to censure Schumer for his pathetic attempt at intimidation of #SupremeCourt.”
McConnell did not say in his speech whether he will support the motion.
